“国际博物馆日”（IMD, International Museum Day）诞生于1977年。这一年，在俄罗斯（原苏联）莫斯科举行的国际博物馆理事会大会上通过了一项决议：设立一个年度活动，其“目的是进一步统一博物馆的创造性愿望和努力，并吸引世界公众对其活动的关注。”
自此，国际博物馆协会（ICOM, International Council of Museums）向世界宣布每年的5月18日是国际博物馆日，它旨在传达“博物馆是文化交流、丰富文化和发展人民之间相互理解、合作与和平的重要手段"。
这一年度活动吸引了越来越多的博物馆参与其中，于是国际博物馆协会于1992年公布了国际博物馆日的第一个主题“博物馆与环境”(Museums and Environment)。而后每年的国际博物馆日都有一个特别的主题。1997年，国际博物馆日的第一张海报面世。
