Yenching Academy of Peking University delegation Gets a Pleasant Surprise in Zhuhai, an International Student Finds He Shares the Same Name as Yung Wing's Son
“容闳儿子的英文名也叫Morrison，这太神奇了，我还从来没遇到跟我一样以Morrison为名而非姓的人。”6月13日，珠海博物馆内，北京大学燕京学堂的英国留学生Morrison Anthony Cleaver指着展览柜中容闳给儿子容觐彤写的寄语，惊讶地说。事实上，之所以这样取名，是为了纪念容闳曾经就读的马礼逊学校，而这穿越百年、跨越大洋大洲的巧合，令此时此刻的留学生Morrison感慨不已。“容闳您好！我和您的儿子同名！”
“The English name of Yung Wing’s son is also Morrison. This is so amazing! I’ve never met anyone else with Morrison as their given name rather than their surname,” said Morrison Anthony Cleaver, a British international student from Yenching Academy of Peking University, pointing at a message written by Yung Wing to his son Morrison Brown Yung in a display case at Zhuhai Museum on June 13. In fact, Yung Wing named his son this way to commemorate Morrison School where he once studied. This coincidence that has spanned over a century and crossed oceans and continents deeply impressed the international student Morrison at this moment.“Hello, Yung Wing! I share the same name as your son!”
6月12日至13日，经外交部驻港公署推荐，太平洋国际交流基金会（中美交流基金会）组织北京大学燕京学堂代表团访问珠海，让来自美国、墨西哥、巴西、俄罗斯、英国、阿联酋等国家与地区的燕京学堂学生们实地感受珠海的城市脉搏，了解粤港澳大湾区发展。类似Morrison这样的惊喜，无时无刻不在上演。
From June 12 to 13, recommended by the Office of Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR, China-United States Exchange Foundation led a delegation from Yenching Academy of Peking University on a visit to Zhuhai. Students from countries and regions including the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the UAE experienced Zhuhai’s urban vitality firsthand and learned about the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Pleasant surprises like Morrison’s unfolded at every turn.

12日上午，代表团从香港出发经由港珠澳大桥来到珠海。在珠两天时间，代表团走进了北京师范大学珠海校区的未来设计学院、非遗传习坊，与珠海的大学生共同观看皮影戏、动手剪纸；参观了珠海规划展览馆、珠海博物馆，看珠海从新石器时代至今数千年的文脉、建市以来的成就；走访了珠海太空中心、中德（珠海）人工智能研究院有限公司，了解中国的航空航天产业发展，以及珠海企业在VR、AI等领域的贡献。
On the morning of the 12th, the delegation departed from Hong Kong and arrived in Zhuhai via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. During their two-day stay, the delegation visited the School of Future Design and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop at Beijing Normal University’s Zhuhai Campus. There, they watched a shadow puppet show and tried paper-cutting with local university students. They also toured Zhuhai Planning Exhibition Hall and Zhuhai Museum, exploring the city’s cultural legacy that spans millennia—from the Neolithic Age to its modern achievements since becoming a special economic zone. Visits to the Zhuhai Aerospace Land and 4DAGE offered insights into China’s aerospace industry and the contributions of Zhuhai enterprises in fields like VR and AI.

“在西雅图我也看过皮影戏，因为我们有庞大的在美华人社区。但在珠海我是第一次自己上手操作体验，真正用皮影讲了一个故事。”Wen Imara So Eckelberg说，仔细看这些皮影的花纹、颜色感觉非常棒，而看到像她一样大的年轻人依然在传承这项非遗文化也令她十分感动。
“I’ve seen shadow puppet shows before, as we have a large Chinese community in Seattle. But in Zhuhai, it was my first time getting hands-on experience and actually using the puppets to tell a story.” Wen Imara So Eckelberg marveled at the intricate patterns and colors of the puppets, adding that she was deeply moved by seeing young people her age dedicated to passing down this intangible cultural heritage.
高怀安是中美混血的美籍学生，在珠海规划展览馆，他惊叹于珠海城市发展之迅速。“一百多年前，这里还是小码头、小渔村，现在巨变早已发生，有通达八方的路桥、世界前沿的科技和所有这一切，令人震撼。”
At Zhuhai Planning Exhibition Hall, Elijah Karshner, a mixed Chinese and American descent, marveled at Zhuhai’s rapid development. “A hundred years ago, it was a small wharf and fishing village, and now great changes have taken place here. The extensive railways, cutting-edge technologies and everything, are astonishing,” he said.
来自美国的Mira Ann Vance对VR技术在文旅方面的应用十分感兴趣，在中德（珠海）人工智能研究院有限公司的展厅里，她了解到许多博物馆的VR实景展示都来自珠海，而VR在城市安全、文物保护等方面也有相当大的作用。“对于不能亲自到一个景区或者博物馆的人来说，VR看展是很好的方式，推广这项技术很有意义。”
Hailing from the US, Mira Ann Vance expressed strong interest in VR applications for cultural tourism. At 4DAGE, she learned that VR immersive displays for many museums originate from Zhuhai, and that VR plays a significant role in urban safety and cultural relic preservation. “VR exhibitions are a fantastic solution for people unable to visit sites or museums in person. Promoting this technology is a meaningful endeavor,” she said.

北京大学燕京学堂副院长范士明表示，燕京学堂是为培养“了解中国、贡献世界”的全球未来领导者而设立，2014年成立至今已经招收了来自全球390所著名大学、85个国家和地区的研究生。“在中国各地实地调研是我们培养学生的重要方式，只有真正站在中国的土地上，才能了解中国。这次来到珠海，我们就能了解到，原来它不仅是课本里的经济特区，还是中国留学生之父容闳的故乡，并且有这么好的故事、科技成就、发展前景。”
Vice Dean of Yenching Academy of Peking University Fan Shiming introduced that the Academy is established to cultivate global future leaders who ‘understand China and contribute to the world’. Since its founding in 2014, it has enrolled graduate students from 390 renowned universities in 85 countries and regions. “Field research across China is a vital part of our student’ education.One can only truly understand China by actually standing on its land.This visit to Zhuhai reveals that it’s not just a Special Economic Zone in the textbook; it’s also the hometown of Yung Wing (the Father of Chinese Overseas Students), and it boasts remarkable stories, technological achievements, and promising development prospects,” he said.
